They finished. Did they understand?
A completed worksheet shows completion. A short exit ticket can reveal what students understand—and help you decide what to teach next.
1 · Try this teaching move
Choose one learning goal. Ask students to identify the key idea and explain their reasoning.
Keep it brief. Use the responses to plan your next lesson.
2 · See it in practice
Goal: Distinguish a claim from supporting evidence.
“Our playground needs more shade trees. Students measured 34°C in an unshaded area and 28°C beneath a tree.”
Ask students:
- What is the claim?
- Which information supports it?
- How does that information support the claim?
Teacher judgment: If writing obscures understanding, invite an oral explanation. Assess writing separately when writing is the goal.
3 · Let AI help you draft
Copy and adapt this prompt:
“Using my lesson text and learning goal, draft three brief exit-ticket questions. Include suggested answers and possible misconceptions. Use only the supplied information. Flag assumptions for my review.”
Before using the questions: Check accuracy, alignment, and language demands. Revise anything students could answer without understanding.
4 · Try → Notice → Adjust
This week: Use the ticket. Identify one response pattern and adjust your teaching.
Next week: Check again with a comparable example.
Keep four notes: goal → responses → adjustment → next check.
5 · Tell me what happened
